Chapter 14
Allie was out for her morning stroll. Since Daphne and crew had arrived, she’d taken to walking up and down the road in the mornings to check for paparazzi. The first two weeks had been pretty bad, with plenty of visitors like the one Chuck had caught hiding in the bushes. They had gotten a couple pictures of Daphne sunbathing and one of her leaving on the back of Blaze’s bike. Allie didn’t know where Daphne went with Blaze, if not to miscellaneous parties, but those trips seemed to upset Finn more than her trips into town to the bar. Something drastic had definitely happened during the last disappearance, when she claimed she’d slept on the front porch all night. She looked as if she’d been dragged through a war zone when Allie had found her.
She knew Karl worried that someone who routinely hid in bushes to photograph people could be dangerous. So she had reluctantly agreed to carry a small can of Mace with her when she went out for her walks. As she approached the driveway leading into Clifftop Fantasies, a rustling noise in the woods caught her attention. Allie stopped dead, staring toward the sound. She wasn’t afraid of having her picture taken, or of someone attacking her, despite Karl’s warnings. She was more afraid of losing her temper at the intruder and doing something she would regret later. Would Chuck arrest her, she wondered, if she actually used the chemical spray? Slowly she crept to the edge of a bush and peered around it as quietly as she could. She thought she saw movement in the middle distance, toward the road, but if it was a person, he had disappeared behind the trees. Maybe a bear trap would stop them. Hmm. She smiled to herself as she went back to the house.
Decker was standing on the front porch. He had a cup of coffee in one hand, and to be honest, he didn’t look much better than Daphne had that Sunday morning.
“Good morning,” he said politely. “You don’t get enough exercise cooking and cleaning for all of your resident maniacs?”
She smiled. “Actually I get plenty that way, but I’ve started checking for reporters since Daphne came. I don’t want future guests thinking that they’re going to end up in the tabloids if they take their clothes off in the backyard. I know it’s silly, but I worry.”
“Understandable. Thanks for making coffee before you went out.” He raised his cup as a salute and followed her into the kitchen.
“You kind of look like you needed it. Is anything wrong?”
Decker grunted and sat down at the kitchen table while Allie took down a large griddle and plugged it into the wall.
“By the way, I really like your cooking,” Decker told her, grinning as she pulled out an odd assortment of food from the cupboard and fridge. “It’s unusual, but good.”
“Really?” Allie stopped opening packages and looked at him. “Do you mean that? Sometimes I don’t think anybody does, and I should just start buying doughnuts and making spaghetti or hamburgers every night.
